On January 15 the Governor Alexander Moor had a working meeting with the President of the Russian Cross-country Ski Association Elena Vyalbe. They discussed the possibility of holding international and all-Russian competitions in cross-country skiing in Tyumen Oblast.
"Tyumen Oblast has held various international sport events. We are ready to continue active development of winter sports in this region. We are well-placed to do that," Alexander Moor emphasised.
Special attention was given to the potential for development of local ski sports. Over 16,000 people practice cross-country skiing. To organize the preparation of a sports reserve, four ski complexes with roller ski tracks are functioning all year round. Athletes practice cross-country skiing and biathlon at the premises of Luiza Noskova's Olympic reserve sports school.
The Governor Alexander Moor and the President of the Russian Cross-country Ski Association also discussed the possibility of holding the Biathlon Champions Race in Tyumen.
"Tyumen is a well-known training venue for Russian athletes. Our skiers practice at the regional winter sports center "Pearl of Siberia". Qualifications for the World Junior/Youth (up to 23 y.o.) Championship also took place here. Excellent logistics, outstanding housing and decent sports facilities," the Olympic champion mentioned.
"Winter sports and biathlon are basic for Tyumen Oblast. We need "Pearl of Siberia", as one of the best winter sports centers in the world, to remain in the sporting agenda. We propose holding training camps of the main Russian teams in biathlon and cross-country skiing in a larger volume. We will propose Tyumen Oblast as a venue for the World Cup stages, as soon as the situation with the ban on running international competitions in Russia is cleared up," the Governor summed up.
As a result of the meeting, the regional government and the Russian Cross-country Ski Association decided to hold the Russian Cross-country Skiing Championship 2019-2020 in Tyumen.
